This evening for BBC East Midlands Today I was invited to the grand opening of Lumbers jewellers’ VIP showroom in Leicester. Also on the guest list was opera diva Lesley Garrett festooned with £1.5m of diamonds. She sang from the balcony to an invited audience and I have to say that the whole thing was one of the most surreal evenings that I can remember. Still, the singing was excellent (as were the canapes) but I have to say that I did go away feeling slightly short changed as ‘Diamonds are Forever’ was absent from the song sheet. Not to worry though, as there’s another bash in a day or two with a Shirley Bassey look-a-like…
