For East Midlands Today I had the great pleasure of meeting John who, even though he’s only 23, is retiring from the Police. Mind you, he is a horse. Little John, to give him his real name, is the longest serving horse in the Nottinghamshire Police Mounted Section. I’ve never met a horse who acted like he owned the place. When he walked in he was very cool and just checked everyone out – presumably looking for trouble-makers ( I kept my head down). Respect is due: he ’s clearly seen a lot of action and he even won a national bravery award in 1995 when he successfully chased an armed robber across the city centre. He’s off to live on a farm now with another retired police horse where they’ll no doubt chomp polos and talk about the glory days ‘til the cows come home.
