Our mighty oaks are in peril on account of ‘Oak Decline’. The worst hit area in Britain is Charnwood Forest in Leicestershire. In one wood 80% of the trees have the condition are will all eventually be felled. This is of couse a great pity as they are around 100 years old and no sapling can take their place. This was the lead story on BBC East Midlands Today (and BBC News 24 took it as well). My piece to camera was reverent enough methinks, but in hindsight somewhat reminiscent of the classic footage of the North American Sasquatch.
